Chunchi & Sangama, Karnataka

Chunchi & Sangama. Karnataka

Chunchi waterfalls is on the river Arakavathi and offers a beautiful picturesque waterfalls from a decent height of over 50m. Chunchi coupled with Sangama is very popular weekend getaways and most visited tourist places due to accessibility to the waters. The falls have brushed the rocks and boulders and making the way for the water flow further into other places around (sangama and mekedatu). The view is quite mesmerizing with the greenery around the water falls. It is quite oblivious for one to notice the slippery rocks which are dangerous and can cause severe injuries. Also the deep gorges endanger your memorable experience. Pay caution at all times.

Water drops from a good height and from multiple paths to form a nice pool of water at the bottom. This is reasonably better place to dip and relax in the water. It is no less than a swimming pool but of course the water is flowing, one must pay caution all the time during the play.

Sangama is yet another water place which is little away from Chunchi. May be 12kms. This is a must visit place and a widespread waters make it even more glorifying. It is the Sangama of Arakavathi and Cauvery, the merging point. From this point, about 3.5 kilometers downstream, there is a place called Mekedatu and it is a place where river Cauvery flows through a deep and narrow gorge. Very terrifying view and takes you by shock at the first glance.  It is a Rock Valley.

Travel

Chunchi is 85Kms and Sangama is another 15Kms. So totally 100+Kms from Bangalore. Hop on the NICE road and alight on Kanakapura Road. Travel little beyond Kanakapura, one will see a left turn towards Sangama with a big visible post having the direction (Chunchi is on this route). Travel straight and at one junction, we turn left to Chunchi and gradual right towards Sangama. The preference is visit Chunchi first and then go to Sangama to relax till evening.
Sangama is 12 to 15KMs away. Drive down to Sangama to enjoy in the not so deep waters (mostly walkable stream during summers). The water would be at knee length giving you the safe yet amazing swimming expeirence.

Stay & Food

Since it is a weekend affair and very short distance, the stay is not preferable. In case one is traveling from far distances then the best place to stay is Mysore. There are ample hotels in Mysore, recommended are Ginger and Mango hotels.

Breakfast can be had at restaurants on Kanakapura road.
Lunch, the only option is KSTDC restaurant in Sangama.

Best time to Visit

Winter/Summer : Each season offers unique experience. Preferably summer as you can well dip into waters and enjoy the cool.
Rainy season is also preferable as the waterfalls will be at its best during this time.
